Small Car Saturday Championships At
Dunn Hill 2 Speedway
The final event
of the 2012 racing season for Small Car Saturday was sponsored by J
W Maynard and Sons Truck Repair. The afternoon and evening was full
of great racing with new faces picking up those first wins. The
2012 Champions were finalized and some of the points battles were
tight and others were decided by the team just taking the green. It
was a jammed packed day of racing and the fans on the hill got to
see lots of excitement.
The kart portion
of the days events were up first, with Super Seniors making their
way onto the rack. This points race was very close and it all
depended on who won both the qualifying race and the feature. It
was Rodney McConnell who grabbed his seventh feature win as he led
all but
one lap of the
event. Bren Lattimer finished in second and grabbed his first track
championship, by only four points. Rounding out the finishing order
was Dale Anderson in third.
Rookie Purple
was the next division to grace the track. The race for the feature
and the points were very tight all season long. Connor Davis found
his way into victory lane for the seventh time over the points
champion Doug Newbigging who finished in second. Both of these boys
raced their hearts out each week and still managed to visit with
each other after the races. The rest of the feature finish was
Michael Davis in third, Caleb Hadlock in fourth and Austin Hughes in
fifth.
Sportskids
points championship race was decided when Keith Lamphere took the
green for the event. Keith had fourteen feature wins during the
2012 season. He held off Tamara Burkholder who finished in second
for the win. Third went to D J Knolles, fourth to Paul Corron and
fifth to Dom Rogers.
Going into the
Novice Blue feature event it was anyones championship to be had.
Cody Kershner who has been in the point lead had to hold off second
in points Seth Anderson. When the green flag dropped it was
Kershner who grabbed the lead. He was challenged by Jacob Doyle and
Seth Anderson. Seth took the second position and he set his sights
on the 22 of Kershner. They raced hard and clean throughout the
feature with lap traffic playing a role. When the checkered flag
fell it was Cody Kershner grabbing the win and his first
championship. Finishing in second was Seth Anderson, third was Jacob
Doyle, fourth was Lacin Terry and rounding out the top five was
Mitch Maynard.
As the season
progress so did the kart count in the Sportsmen class. Doug Lantz
had control of the points lead for most of the season. He had to
take the green and the title would be his. Anything can happen on a
double points night. Lady luck was with Doug through the whole
feature event. He held off Rich Vanderpool early in the event. In
the closing laps Keith Lamphere the only other driver to win a
feature in this division moved into second. Keith tried to dethrone
Lantz for one more win. Doug would not have it and grabbed win
number 15 and his first kart championship. Third went to Rich
Vanderpool, fourth to D J Knolles and fifth to Paul Corron.
They combined
the Stock Appearing Clone division and the Animal division due to
lack of cars. Mike Ely picked up the win and the championship in
the Stock Appearing Clone. Mike had five feature wins during the
season. Bob Coveney grabbed the win and the championship in the
Animal division. Bob had two feature wins and many consistent
finishes getting him the championship.
The flat head
division found some real excitement for the fans. Bob Coveney and
Quinn Davis took the green flag. Coveney grabbed the early lead,
but it was Quinn Davis who was hungry for the win. Quinn stole it
away on lap three and held off the Coveney machine to capture his
first victory of the 2012 season. It was a very emotional win for
Davis as he held the early points lead. By virtue of Bob Coveney's
consistent finishes without a feature win, during the season he was
crowned the champion by seventeen points over Quinn Davis. Cliff
Casterline was not able to start the feature event.
On to the Micro
and Slingshot portion of the final race of the 2012 season. It was
a race of the fittest for the Rookie 270 Micros. Current points
leader Kelsi Jenkins suffered mechanical problems and was not able
to start the feature event. When the green flag fell it was Brent
Heeman grabbing the lead. Caution came out for Allen Carnrike who
went pit side. On the restart it was Alex Shaffer who grabbed the
lead. Alex lead until lap seven when something went wrong with the
88 sending him pit side. On the restart Heeman grabbed the lead
back, but for only one lap when Scott Dean took the top spot. Dean
lead the rest of the feature securing win
number three of
the season. Finishing in second was newcomer Oscar Fassett who
purchased the old Denny Rinehimer number 5. Third went to Brent
Heeman, fourth to Alex Shaffer and fifth to Allen Carnrike. By
virtue of her points lead Kelsi Jenkins secured enough points to be
the Track Champion for the 2012 season.
600 Micros found
Collin Hadlock and Bennett Lennox bringing the field to the green.
Collin lead the first five laps of the twenty lap event. Nick Wood
took the lead on lap six of a caution free event. The battle for
the second position between Hadlock and Lennox was fierce. It
allowed Nick to open up a sizable lead. When the checkers fell it
was Nick Wood recording win six. Finishing in second was Bennett
Lennox, third was Collin Hadlock, fourth was Adam Nicholson and
rounding out the top five was Matt Jones. Nick Wood was also
honored as the Track champion by only 27 points over Collin Hadlock.
The All Star
Slingshot championship was decided as Carl Bittenbender with
fourteen feature wins capture that honor. Bob Boughton and Dalton
Maynard brought the field to the green with Maynard grabbing the
lead. Dalton and Bob raced each other hard and clean for the top
honor. Dalton held him off to capture his first feature win of the
season. Bob Boughton finished in second with Carl Bittenbender in
third, Alex Shaffer in fourth and Alex Boughton in fifth.
270 Micros were
the final event of the 2012 season. Going into the feature event,
Mark Wurzler and Bobby Maynard were in a tight battle for the title.
Both drivers had two wins and many consistent finishes. It would
come down to who won and where the other finished. Bobby knew he
had to win the feature event. He grabbed the lead early and held
off the Wurzler machine for twelve laps. A mechanical problem sent
his title hopes packing, as he fell off the pace on lap 12. That
gave the lead and the title to Mark Wurzler. Mark went on to pick
up his third feature event of the season. Finishing in second was
Kyle Traver, third was Denny Rinehimmer, fourth was Tim Aberant and
fifth was Bobby Maynard.
That brings to a
close the first season of Small Car Saturday. For those of you who
came and watched spread the word. These children and adults put on
some of the best racing in this area. Thankfully Mark Spencer and
his staff opened up their track to have racing close to home for all
of these competitor. Some travel a distance, but the others that
live in the area were saved some traveling for the 2012 season.
